Obituary for Nina E Piper (Burton)

Nina E  Piper (Burton)
Nina Evelyn Piper, beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2015. She was 88 years old.

Nina was born on June 17, 1926, in Murphysboro, Illinois to Clyde J. and Jewel A. (Wright) Burton. She lived in Murphysboro and Carbondale almost all of her life. At the age of 16, she played piano at dances for soldiers and sailors. She was a lifelong member of the St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Murphysboro and played the organ and piano for the Church for 20 years. She entertained residents of local nursing homes with her music and established senior citizen kitchen bands. She worked as Activity Director in local nursing homes and as Director at the Murphysboro Senior Citizens Center.

She is survived by her brother Robert Burton and wife Pat; her sister Jenny Truenow and husband Don;

and by three daughters and two sons: Diana Pierson and husband David, Jane Chancey and husband Steve, Mary Ann Kheniser and husband Issam, David Cheatham and wife Carole, and Richard Cheatham.

Nina also leaves 16 grandchildren: Laura Bray, Marcia Daniels, James (Jim) Cheatham, Eric Cheatham, Amy Bergman, Christopher Chancey, Jacob Chancey, William (Billy) Chancey, Emily Meade, Aaron Cheatham, Adam Cheatham, Allen Cheatham, Nathan Cheatham, Joseph Cheatham, Issam Kheniser, and Karim Kheniser; as well as 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her younger brothers George and Harry, her step-mother Olivia Burton, her husband Elmer Piper, and her sons Charles William (Billy) Piper and James Rodger (Jim) Cheatham.

A celebration of her life for family and friends will be on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Trinity Baptist Church on Highway 13 in Murphysboro, with visitation from 9-11 AM and services from 11-12AM. In lieu of flowers, Nina prefers contributions be made to St. Peter's United Church of Christ (Murphysboro) or the Salvation Army. For more information, please visit www.pettettfuneralhome.com.
