Obituary for John Carvell

John  Carvell
John Carvell, 88, of Murphysboro, Illinois, passed away on December 12, 2016, at Manor Court in Carbondale, Illinois, following a short illness.

John was born on March 28, 1928, in Hughes, West Virginia, to Frank and Mary Frances (Spino) Carvell.

John married JoAnn (Baber) Vance of Gypsy, West Virginia. After their marriage of 52 years, JoAnn passed away on Nov. 12, 2002. He later married Sylvia (Fingar) Hunziker on April 4, 2004. She survives in Murphysboro.

John is survived by his sons; Steven (Karen) Carvell of Mesa, AZ, and Mark (Mary) Carvell of Carbondale, IL;

daughters Leslie (Mark) Theiss of Pinetop/Lakeside, AZ, and Joan (Mike) Letwenko of Rio Rancho, NM.

three sisters Elizabeth (Don) Christenson of University Park, FL, Esther Carroll of Lancaster, NY, and Angie (Bob) Watson of Bridgeport, WV;

and two brothers Ret. Colonel Richard Carvell of WV and Ret. Lt. Colonel F. Joseph Carvell and his wife Paula of Newport, VA;

John leaves two granddaughters Julia (Mike) DeRose of Tempe, AZ and Maria Carvell of Chicago, IL; and three grandsons James Carvell of Murphysboro, John Winston Carvell of Carbondale, and Ted Carvell of New Jersey. He also leaves two great-granddaughters and one great grandson.

From his second marriage, he leaves three step-children Loraine (Kevin Boucher) Hunziker, Scott (Traci) Hunziker and Philip (Tina) Hunziker, all of Murphysboro. Step grandchildren Brittany Hanson of Chicago, Hannah Brooks of Cincinnati, OH, David Brooks and Jonathan Hunziker of Murphysboro.

John served in the US Army as WWII was ending. He was stationed in Occupied Japan until his discharge.

John was in corporate business, working for Kroger, Armour, Coca-Cola, Cuddidy and Pacific Vegetable Oils as upper management. He decided to downsize to enjoy more time with his family and took a position as Vice-President of DuQuoin Packing. This brought him and his family to Southern Illinois. Later John decided to open his own business, PoolCo of Carbondale, IL. He and JoAnn operated the business until they retired in 1993. The business is now owned by his son, Mark and his wife Mary. John and JoAnn loved to travel and he continued to do so after her death when he married Sylvia. John was a member of First United Methodist Church of Murphysboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son John David Carvell, grandson Robert Carvell and brother Leonard Carvell.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016, at the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro with Rev. Shaker Samuel officiating and entombment at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park with military services conducted by the Paul Stout American Legion Post # 127. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Pettett Funeral Home and until 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Murphysboro Food Pantry or to the United Methodist Church in Murphysboro.
