Obituary for Wanda Coffel (Mulkin)

Wanda  Coffel (Mulkin)
Wanda Coffel, 90, of Murphysboro, passed away at 11:35 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2017, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Wanda was born on June to 12, 1926, in Herrin, Illinois, to Bill and Mae (Bradley) Mulkin.

She had worked for over 30 years as a licensed nurse beginning at Marshall Browning Hospital in DuQuoin, then at the Carbondale Clinic, and finally retiring from the Jackson County Nursing Home on Murphysboro. She worked in the Same Day Surgery, working as a volunteer helper. Nursing was her life. She received several trophies for her outstanding volunteer work. She was considered a "lifeline for elderly people".

Mrs. Coffel was a charter member of the Murdale Baptist Church in Carbondale. She was very active in her Adult Ladies Sunday School Class, and enjoyed singing in the choir. She volunteered in anyways that she could, he helped with Blood drives, and served coffee at the church and at funeral dinners.

Wanda married Carl Coffel, Jr. on January 15, 1947, in DuQuoin, he preceded her in death on September 27, 1994.

She is survived by two sons Steven Lee Coffel of Carbondale, and Thomas Coffel and his wife Cindy Coffel of Murphysboro;

five grandchildren Trisha (Bert) Kooststra, Jeff (Suzanna) Davidson, Thomas Adam (Jonnah) Coffel, Christopher Coffel, and Erica McLaughlin (Mitch) Murphy;

six great grandchildren Stephanie Kooststra, Becky (Brian) Connel, Kyson Rix, Alexa Davidson, Liam Murphy and Elliott Murphy;

one great great granddaughter Avery Connel;

one brother Bill Mulkin and one twin sister Mary Crews, both of DuQuoin.

She was preceded in death by one daughter Carla Tocha, and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2017, at Pettett Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Hicks officiating and burial at the Old DuQuoin Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Murdale Baptist Church. For more information, please visit www.pettettfuneralhome.com.
