Obituary for Levi V. Schmitto

Levi V.  Schmitto
Levi V. Schmitto, 83, of Murphysboro, passed away at 8:06 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at his residence in Murphysboro.

Levi was born on July 5, 1933, in Carbondale, to Alexander Von Schmitto and Madge M. (Bearden) Schmitto.

In the U.S. Army, he had served in France during the Korean Conflict.

Levi had worked for thirty years at the Illinois Central and then later the Illinois Central and Gulf as a carman welder.

Mr Schmitto was a member of the First Assembly of God in Murphysboro. He was a fifty year member of the American Legion Post # 127 in Murphysboro.

He liked to fish and hunt. He was an avid reader of western books, he was a Cardinal fan, but he especially loved to go to Branson.

Levi married Mary Ellen Moore on June 28, 1958, in Murphysboro, and she survives.

Other survivors include two daughters and son in laws Cathy and Carl Cauble of Murphysboro and Sandra and Michael McCoy of Carbondale;

three grandchildren Tamara Schuman and her husband Brian Schuman, Amber Durham and her husband Christopher Durham, and Ryne McCoy;

seven great grandchildren Madison Durham, Carmella Schuman, Savannah Schuman, Matthew Durham, Mason Durham, Maddox Durham, and Trenton Schuman;

his best friend, his dog Snickers; his best buddy and care giver Albert Wehrheim, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers, his parents, three brother in laws, his father in law and mother in law.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Pettett Funeral Home with Rev. Dean Akins officiating and burial at Mt. Joy Cemetery with military services conducted by the Paul Stout American Legion Post # 127 Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday until 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
