Obituary for Dale W. Adkins

Dale W.  Adkins
Dale W. Adkins, 79, of Murphysboro, passed away at 10:11 a.m. Sunday, July 9, 2017, at his residence in Murphysboro.

Dale was born on February 19, 1938, in Olney, Illinois, to Wade S. Adkins and Nancy (Bickers) Adkins Greenwood.

Mr. Adkins was a very active member of the Murphysboro Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. He attended the First Presbyterian Church in Murphysboro.

He married Nancy Engels on January 25, 1958, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin, Illinois, and she survives.

Other survivors include a son Scott Adkins of Ubatu Sa Paula, Brazil; four grandchildren, and one half sister Lissa Alice Tate of Newton.

He was preceded in death by one half sister Juel Probst, one half brother Paul Adkins and his parents.

He was a broadcaster and he and his wife Nancy were partners in the ownership and operation of WINI Radio Station for many years in Murphysboro. Trading Post was a very well know broadcast as well as they broadcasting the Apple Festival in Murphysboro from 1963 to 2006, from the famous WINI trailer.
Adkins was a partner with Ralph Dunn, James Dunn, and Marion Dunn in WINI-A/Murphysboro, IL from 1968 through 2000; Adkins and wife Nancy bought out the other partners in 2000 and sold the station to Southern Illinois Radio Group in 2009,

Adkins previously served as General Manager at WREY-A/New Albany, IN and WDQN-A/DuQuoin, IL and as engineer and announcer at WAIK-A/Galesburg, IL, KLIN-A/Lincoln, NE, and WEIC-A/Charleston, IL. He also called high school and college sports for many years, including Southern Illinois University football and men's basketball in 1973-84. Most recently, Adkins was working as a consultant to AM radio stations and as a public relations/advertising consultant.

A private gravesite service was held at Walker Hill Cemetery in Grand Tower, IL. Memorials may be made to the family or to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc., 305 South Illinois Street, Belleville, IL 62220.
