Vera Lee Snowden, 90, of Murphysboro, passed away at 11:02 a.m. Friday, November 3, 2017, at Manor Court in Carbondale.

Vera was born on July 8, 1927, in Murphysboro, Illinois, to Floyd and Zelphia (Ripley) Rains.

She was a homemaker, but worked outside of the home at Brown Shoe Company, Bread Store, Diaper Service, and Lincoln and John A. Logan School. She loved being around children and especially loved being called "Grandma" by them.

Mrs. Snowden was a member of Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro. Her Faith in God sustained her over the course of her life.

Vera married twice. She married Dester Taylor on November 4, 1945, and he was killed in a car accident on June 30, 1952. She then married Joseph Snowden on August 7, 1953, and he passed away on October 26, 1992. They were happily married for thirty-nine years.

Vera is survived by four children Linda (Taylor) and Dennis Heape of Murphysboro, Jim and Marilyn Taylor of Murphysboro, JoAnn Snowden of Waterloo, and Mike and Sandy Snowden of DeSoto;

nine grandchildren Shelly (Smith) and her husband Gary Grob of Waterloo, Jimmy Taylor and his wife Danyiel Taylor of Spanaway, WA, Amy (Taylor) and her husband Rob Ellis of Marble Falls, TX, Josh Heape and his wife Melissa Heape of Phoenix, AZ, Katie (Taylor) and her husband Michael Meyer of Southwest Ranches, FL, Jared Taylor of Murphysboro, and Crystal (Snowden) and her husband Josh Hicks, Conner Snowden, and Carter Snowden, all of DeSoto;

fourteen great grandchildren Jordyn Taylor, Tyler Grob, Devin Taylor, Clayton Grob, Jayden Burton, Alexandra Ellis, Logan Wright, Austin Ellis, Lizie Wright, Madison Heape, Jasmine Meyer, Kruz Meyer, Layne Hicks, and Emily Heape;

three sisters Darlene Lindsey, Frankie and her husband Bob Swetland, and Donna and her husband Ronnie Johnson, all of Murphysboro;

one sister in law Bonnie Rains Cain of Herrin; and much loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her only brother Joe Rains, and brother in law Claude "Duke" Lindsey in 2007.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at Pettett Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Allen officiating and burial at Tower Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. For more information, please visit www.pettettfuneralhome.com
