Obituary for Freda Irene Maxedon (Fager)

Freda Irene  Maxedon (Fager)
Freda Maxedon (nee Fager), 91, of Salem, formerly from Murphysboro, passed away at her home, with family, on Friday, February 23, 2018.

Freda was born, in Murphysboro, to William and Irene (Nausley) Fager. She graduated from Vergennes High School. She married William T Maxedon on April 2, 1949, and he preceded her in death on February 29, 2004.

Freda was a loving mother and grandmother; her family was her joy. There were many evenings spent playing Rummy and Uno around the kitchen table with her grandchildren. Family gatherings made her happy. She loved working jigsaw puzzles, reading, doing word search puzzles and watching her St. Louis Cardinals. She drove a school bus for the Murphysboro School District for 27 years, retiring at age 77 and moving to Salem.

Mrs. Maxedon was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include: Sons Glenn (Tracy) Maxedon and Ted (Sharon) Maxedon, of Mt Vernon, and Dale, of Murphysboro; daughters Joyce (Cecil) McWhorter, of Salem; Jean Shehorn, of Xenia and Judy (the late Landon) Rankin, of Kell;

grandchildren Tonya Maxedon, Ashley Sweeten, Austin Maxedon, Shannon Russell, Dustin Troutt, Brad Rankin, Brent Rankin, Trey Maxedon, Doug, Kay and Gary McWhorter;

11 great-grandchildren and two great-great granddaughters;

a brother Albert Fager of DeSoto;

faithful Chihuahua Missy;

family friend Charles Steckenrider, and her devoted “nanny", Nancy Reed.

Freda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 54 years, an infant daughter, brothers Harlan and James and son-in-law Landon Rankin.

Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Wednesday with Rev. Milton Bost officiating, in Pettett Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 11 am to 1 pm Wednesday. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery, in rural Murphysboro, very near her childhood home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Zion Cemetery Fund, at either Pettett Funeral Home or Roger-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem.
