Obituary for Glenn Dale Shands

Glenn Dale  Shands
Glenn Dale Shands, 60, of Murphysboro, passed away at 8:49 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2015, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.

Glenn was born on April 19, 1955, in Kennett, Missouri, to Glenn Shands and Betty (Tate) Shands.

He had served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1976 to 1978.

Mr. Shands was Southern Baptist by faith.

Glenn had worked as a fork truck driver at GS Metals in Pinckneyville. When he was able, he enjoyed mowing his own lawn and mowing lawns for other people.

He married Rhonda Verbal on June 22, 1986, in Murphysboro, and she survives.

Other survivors include two children Travis Shands and his wife Amanda Shands of DeSoto and Brittni Heilig and her husband James Heilig of Murphysboro;

three grandchildren Jacob Heilig, Noah Heilig, and Mason Heilig, all of Murphysboro;

two brothers Kenny (Karen) Shands of Johnston City, Mike Shands of Murphysboro and one sister Patti Shands of Murphysboro;

several nieces and nephews;

his mother in law Ruth Verbal of Murphysboro, one sister in law Brenda (John) Hammann of Springfield; one brother in law Rick (Barbara) Verbal of Murphysboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his father in law Rolla "Gene" Verbal.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2015, at Pettett Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Allen officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

There will be gravesite services at 11 a.m. Friday at Murdale Gardens of Memory. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery. For more information, please visit www.pettettfuneralhome.com.
