Obituary for Stevan Edson Burtnett

Stevan Edson  Burtnett
Stevan Edson Burtnett, 74, of Murphysboro, passed away at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2017, at his home in Murphysboro.

Stevan was born on August 20, 1942, in Peoria, Illinois, to Robert Burtnett and Eleanor (Edson) Burtnett.

Mr. Burtnett had worked over thirty years as a police officer and spent most of that time as a police K-9 handler. Steve was a twenty-seven year veteran of the Mt. Vernon Police Department.

He was an avid Ham Radio operator, and he loved St. Louis Cardinal baseball and fishing. Steve also cherished time spent with his grandchildren.

Mr. Burtnett was an active member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Murphysboro.

Steve is survived by his wife Rebecca "Becky" Leyes. They were married on August 17, 1974, in Wilmington, Illinois.

Other survivors include one son and daughter-in-law Robert and Jody Burtnett of Decatur;

two daughters and sons-in-law Ann and Blake Klug of Cedarburg, WI and Deborah and Doug Minner of Hutchinson, KS.;

seven grandchildren James Burtnett and Elliot Burtnett, both of Decatur, Chris and Kari Klug of Cedarburg, WI and Aidan, Sean, and Eleanor Minner, all of Hutchison, KS;

one great-granddaughter Kinsley Riemenschneider of Cedarburg, WI;

one brother Dale Burtnett of Gage, OK; and one sister Sue Tappeiner and her husband John Tappeiner of Corvallis, OR.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

His body will be cremated and a memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at St. Andrew Catholic Church with Father Gary Gummersheimer officiating and burial at St. Andrew Cemetery. Rosary will be at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the church with a visitation will follow from 9:30 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus.
