Obituary for Dean Shields

Dean  Shields
Dean Shields, 64, of Murphysboro, passed away at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.

Dean was born on August 6, 1951, in Murphysboro, to Stoney Matthew Shields and Lillie May (Bower) Shields.

He was a graduate of the Gorham High School and he attended John A. Logan College in Carterville.

Dean was a farmer for forty one years and he loved farming. He loved his family and friends, and he enjoyed traveling. He was a scuba diver, a flyer, a skier, boater, motorcyclist, and winemaker.

Mr. Shields was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro. He served on the Jackson County Farm Bureau Board and on the Illinois Corn Growers Board. He was a crop watcher for the Farm Week Newspaper. He was a member of the wine making group called Stream Side Cellar Winemaking.

Dean married Patti Tedrow on January 31, 1998, in Murphysboro, and she survives.

Other survivors include two sons Eric Shields and his wife Marianne and their three children Alec, Audrina, and Clara Shields, all of Carbondale, and Greg Shields and his wife Eloise Shields of Denver, CO;

two sisters Vivian Moll and her husband Bob Moll of St. Louis, MO and Liz Kenon of Atlanta, GA;

an aunt Irene Parker and an uncle Lee Bower.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Elmer Shields and Sam Shields, and one sister Ruth Ellenberg.

His body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Pettett Funeral Home with Father Gary Gummersheimer and Rev. Larry Gilbert officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew Catholic Church, the United Methodist Church, or Our Savior Lutheran Church.
